Yard Clean-Up
LEAVES & YARD WASTE

Leaves, grass clippings, and brush are picked up each garbage day from mid-April through mid-November. Place these items beside your garbage cart by 6AM on your garbage day. Bag sizes must be 33 gallons or less and weigh under 40 pounds. Brush must be less than 3 inches in diameter and bundles must be less than 3 feet long and weigh less than 40 pounds. Bundles must be bound with string or twine.

NOTE:
It is a violation of city ordinance to place yard or boulevard leaves in the street or in/along Minnehaha Creek. This can plug storm drains and contribute to algae pollution in our state lakes, rivers, and streams.

STREET SWEEPS

Public Works conducts the spring street sweep in April and the fall sweep between mid-October and mid-November. Cars must be moved from the streets so crews can clear leaves, sand and other debris. Watch for street signs that are posted at least 24-hours before towing of unmoved cars begins. No Parking signs will be posted the day prior to the sweep - or on Friday for a Monday sweep. Signs will specify the day of the week and times during when the sweep will occur. Vehicles violating the no parking restriction will be tagged and towed.

LITTER & EXCESS GARBAGE

The city will remove any uncontained litter within 20 feet of the alley or curb on garbage collection day. A charge for that service will be included on that property’s next utility bill. Properly bagged garbage + 2 additional large items will not result in additional charges.

Snowflakes & Shovel
SNOW

Sidewalks:
You must shovel public sidewalks next to your property after each snowfall. Commercial properties must clear sidewalks within 4 daylight hours after snow stops. Residential property sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours. It's illegal to shovel snow into streets or alleys

Garbage cart and recycle bins:
By 7AM on your garbage collection day, you must clear a 36” path from your garbage cart & recycle bins to the street or alley. Failure to clear snow within the mandated timelines could result in a fine.

Need sidewalk sand?
Free sidewalk sand is available 24 hours at 4 city locations, including:
• 6036 Harriet Ave S
• E 27th Street, just east of Longfellow Avenue near the Public Works gate.
