THIEVES TARGET SNOW BLOWERS
Lt. Mike Sauro, head of 3rd Precinct's Property Crimes Investigations Unit, advises residents to be especially alert for potential snow blower thieves. "I'm very concerned about the number of recent burglaries that have targeted snow blowers in garages throughout the precinct," he said. "Homeowners need to be sure they use strong locks and strike plates on the service door and take automatic garage door openers with them when they leave their car," he added.
Since Nov. 15, several burglaries in Sector 3 have resulted in the loss of snowblowers. They occurred at 51xx Cedar, 47xx 3rd Av S, 55xx 33rd Av S, and 48xx Clinton. "Call 911 to report strangers lurking near your garage or in the alley, Sauro said, "especially if you don't know the person pushing a snow blower down your alley."
Here's what YOU can do.
Include your snow blower on your inventory of valuables. Record the serial number of your machine. Photograph the snowblower from several angles. Describe the machine, including make, model, coloring, and even details such as gas or electric power, starting type, clearing width, number of speed controls, stages, cc's, wheel size and its cost. THEN:
• Paint some part of the snowblower a distinguishing color to make identification faster and easier.
• Use a padlock in the garage door track as an additional lock to keep burglars from opening the door if they get inside.
• Secure the service door with a maximum or heavy-duty deadbolt lock and maximum-security strike plate.
• Use your vehicle to block the snowblower in the garage.
