Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery Announces Sale Golden Valley, MN—Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery’s Board of Directors has decided that the most cost-effective way to serve more children and families is to consolidate services at its Golden Valley facility. The decision came after nearly a year of reflection and due diligence. The Nursery will now begin the process of selling its South Shelter building located in South Minneapolis. The Nursery’s Board and staff are developing a long-term, sustainable plan for expanding services to children and families in Hennepin County. Sale of the South Minneapolis Shelter facility will allow the Nursery to become more fiscally solvent and better position it to sustain and expand its current services. “The Board conducted a realistic assessment of its program and costs in today’s market. The Nursery has assets invested in property which our Board believes can be better used to leverage additional resources in a more effective way,” according to Executive Director Mary Pat Lee. “This was a difficult decision,” she said. “The Board’s willingness to enter into this evaluation process is a reflection of the members’ serious commitment to their responsibility for oversight of the Nursery, its resources and its programs.” Lee explained that assessments by two independent real estate brokers determined that the South Minneapolis building, which has been temporarily closed for nearly a year, was the more valuable of the two facilities and also the easiest to sell in this real estate market. Over the last two years, the Nursery has experienced a dramatic increase in the number of crisis calls. Since opening its doors in 1983, the Nursery has provided more than 107,000 shelter nights to over 40,000 children. In addition, the Nursery has provided counseling and placement to more than 20,000 families. During the next fiscal year, the Nursery will continue to shelter up to 18 children a night and provide up to 6,500 nights of care for the year. Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery is the only residential crisis nursery in Minnesota and one of only 20 in the nation. Its mission is to work with parents in crisis and the community to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect. It offers free, voluntary services to Hennepin County families in crisis with children newborn through age six, including a 24-hour crisis hotline, crisis counseling, 72-hour residential child care, medical care to children staying at the Nursery, referrals, home visits, parent education and parent support groups.
